Bringing Multilayer SDN Transport Optimization to Life at ONS

In wide-area transport networks, one of the significant advantages of software-defined networking (SDN) is the ability to deliver multi-layer optimization.

ONS2016logo200_200This allows traffic to be switched through the IP/MPLS network or pure optical transport paths based on cost, performance, and protection policies. Moving traffic to the optical layer results in lower cost and latency for traffic that doesn’t need to traverse intermediate locations across the WAN.

Today, however, these benefits are limited to single vendor or geographical (metro, regional, long haul) domains and cannot be applied to legacy optical transport networks. This limitation means that the full value of SDN in the WAN cannot be delivered and, as a result, SDN deployment has been slow to roll out.

With a centralized SDN controller and CALIENT’s optical circuit switches deployed at the edges of the transport network and between vendor and domain boundaries the entire transport network (including all vendor and geographical domains and legacy equipment) becomes a pool of software-defined network resources. The benefits of multi-layer optimization can now be realized across the entire wide area transport network.

This multi-layer network concept will come alive during a series of demos and presentations that CALIENT is participating in at the Open Network Summit (ONS) taking place in Santa Clara from March 14-17.

The CALIENT-ADARA SDN Transport Packet Optical Integration Solution

At the event, we will partner with ADARA Networks and ON.Lab to demonstrate the joint SDN Transport Packet Optical Integration (SDN-TPOI) solution. SDN-TPOI creates an SDN multi-layer network by combining the CALIENT S-Series optical circuit switches and ADARA Axis switches deployed on the edges of wide area networks under the control of ADARA’s CloudFabric Cloud Management Platform and SKY Controller.
