Calient Networks’ DiamondWave™ Photonic Switch Completes Extensive Trial in
Equinix Sandbox™ Testing Environment

San Jose, Calif., June 4, 2001 – Calient Networks, a leading developer of all-photonic switching systems, announces it has successfully completed extensive photonic switch testing with Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), creator and operator of neutral Internet Business ExchangeTM (IBXTM) centers. Since December 2000, Calient’s DiamondWave™ switching system has performed continuous testing of multiple path wavelength switching under long-term operating conditions as a part of Equinix Sandbox, the first neutral testing environment for the research and development of new Internet technologies and services.

"This initial testing has enabled Calient to prove operational viability of the DiamondWave photonic switch in a carrier class networking environment," said Charles Corbalis, Calient president and CEO. "We will continue to work closely with the Equinix team to develop focused applications, such as storage network interconnect and service distribution, which are currently limited by switches that cannot facilitate large port capacities and flexible protocol support. DiamondWave systems are ideal for applications ranging from local switching and fiber plant management to wavelength management in the core of the network. This is the essence of Calient’s ‘Borderless Photonics’ initiative."

"Equinix Sandbox allows companies such as Calient to test yet to be released IP technologies and products under the most strenuous and realistic traffic conditions available," said Jay Adelson, chief technology officer of Equinix. "Equinix Sandbox provides an open environment at the center of the Internet where service providers, vendors and research companies can tap into the most diverse aggregation of Internet companies operating in Equinix’s open marketplaces for Internet infrastructure services. In the Sandbox testing environment, Calient’s purely photonic DiamondWave switch has proven its ability to operate with any protocol, at any speed, at any time."

By field-validating the performance viability of photonic switching with Equinix, Calient looks to pave the way for delivery of wavelength switched services for end-users, and scalability of the technology.
