Calient Networks and the Joint Interoperability Test Command Launch Optical Conformance and Interoperability Testing of DiamondWave™ OOO Transport Switch

Indian Head, MD, February 3, 2003 – Calient Networks announced today that it has signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) Laboratory of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) for optical conformance and interoperability testing. This test program is a required step needed for any equipment proposed for implementation in Department of Defense (DOD) networks.

Calient’s DiamondWave™ switches will be used in the development and validation of DISA optical test procedures, as well as in subsequent interoperability testing with existing communications components used in DOD networks. The DiamondWave system is the first all-optical transport switch to be tested in the JITC labs. Both the DiamondWave 256 and 128 MEMS-based OOO transport switches are already in trial and service in carrier networks.

Mr. Tony Stout, JITC Test Director for Advanced Technologies, stated “Collaboration with industry through Cooperative Research and Development Programs and the role of the Joint Interoperability Test Command help to insure that leading edge technology such as the DiamondWave optical switch can be introduced into the DOD networking environment, providing maximum benefit and minimum risk. This CRADA provides a vehicle for experts in government and industry to collaborate, to insure new technology is available to meet DOD needs.”

Charles Corbalis, President and CEO of Calient Networks, also commented, “Calient welcomes this opportunity to work with the JITC in demonstrating the ability of its next generation optical technology to seamlessly interoperate with existing DOD communication systems. Successful testing will open the door to the high speed, all-optical networks that will be so key to the emergence of the DOD Net-Centric Warfare model.”

About JITC
The U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is the agency responsible for the federally owned facility known as JITC. The JITC is a Government Owned Government Operated (GOGO) laboratory under the meaning of Title 15 USC § 3710a. In entering this CRADA, JITC intends to further its mission of certifying information technology equipment for interoperability with Defense related communications systems.
