Photonics Spectra Awards Circle of Excellence to CALIENT Technologies' DiamondWave™ Photonic Switching System
Industry’s only commercially deployed photonic system is one of 25 most technically innovative products

San Jose, Calif., January 27, 2003 – CALIENT Technologies, a leading global provider of intelligent photonic switching systems, announced today that it has been awarded the 2002 Photonics Circle of Excellence Award. CALIENT received this honor from the editorial advisory board of Photonics Spectra Magazine for its DiamondWave™ PXC photonic switch.

The award will be presented this week to CALIENT co-founder and CEO Charles Corbalis at the Photonics West Conference in San Jose, Calif. (http://spie.org/Conferences/Programs/03/pw/). The much-prized distinction singles out CALIENT’s hardware/software solution as one of 25 most technically innovative products of the year. This is the 15th year of the competition, which has honored such industry firsts and commercial successes as next-generation single-mode non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber, a high-mode dispersion management device, multiplayer mirror film technology, multiple widely-tunable lasers, a reflective spatial light modulator and a 16 million-pixel image sensor.

CALIENT’s DiamondWave PXC is a photonic switching system which provides transparent optical connections without electrical components or conversions. The 3D MEMS switch fabric is a fully non-blocking single-stage design, scalable to 256 x 256. This means that any input port can be connected to any output port, supporting an unprecedented density of up to 65,000 paths through the switch.

Using GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) software, the DiamondWave PXC supports end-to-end connection routing which provides a variety of class-of-service and protection features. An integrated network management system, called DiamondWave Manager, enables point-and-click connection provisioning, configuration, fault and event management, security, software and inventory management.

While dozens of large established companies and start-ups have worked to introduce all-optical photonic switches, the DiamondWave is the only commercially deployed product that combines full 256x256 transparent switch capacity with GMPLS networking intelligence in a single, highly compact and robust switch. CALIENT has also developed innovative testing technologies and equipment to automate its manufacturing process, reduce CAPEX and dramatically increase the reliability of the components and overall product.
